Vinland Saga season 2 episode 12 began with a cloaked figure instructing a group of soldiers to let Olmar know that his Kingsguard application has been rejected. However, this eventually turned into a battle between Olmar and the soldiers, with lead soldier Brodd constantly insulting and teasing him.
If you would have told me a few months ago that Askeladd would end up being the most interesting and complex character, I probably would have balked. For a good long while, he was presented as little more than the gold-hungry mercenary that Thorfinn would eventually have to strike down in order to achieve his revenge, and while that is still technically true, recent episodes have revealed a dimensionality and depth to the man that no other character, not even Thorfinn, has been given thus far. Case in point: Askeladd's welsh heritage. It was easy enough to guess based on the details we've been drip-fed in the past couple of weeks, but the full scope of Askeladd's connection to the land are revealed in the pre-credits scene, where a young Askeladd (who looks uncannily like Thorfinn does now) drags his mother's barely alive body to the shores of her homeland. We learn later that Askeladd's father, Olaf, kept Lydia imprisoned in his room as a concubine for years, and it seems that Askeladd had his own difficult journey to undertake in bringing her home to die.

The previous episode was all about the encounter between King Canute and Eadric, and the former's intense desire to rule over England, for which he went to unexpected measures. Now, the upcoming episode will continue to shed light on Thorfinn and Einer. As usual, the official website of Vinland Saga released a preview video for episode 6, titled "I Want a Horse," and also a little synopsis, which is as follows:
The episode opened with a little flashback of Canute, where we saw him facing downward while Askeladd beheading King Sweyn fearlessly. After the king's death, England and Denmark were at war again with the Viking army under Canute's command. Moreover, Ethelred II had returned from Normandy and reinstated himself as the true king of England, which started a conflict between Canute and Ethelred for the throne.
The title, Vinland Saga, evokes associations to Vinland as described in two Norse sagas. Vinland Saga, however, begins in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England, commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatization of King Cnut the Great's historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior who serves under a group of mercenaries responsible for the deed.
A 24-episode anime television series adaptation, animated by Wit Studio, aired on NHK General TV from July to December 2019. A second season, animated by MAPPA, premiered on Tokyo MX and BS11 in January 2023.
An anime television series adaptation of Vinland Saga was announced in March 2018. Produced by Twin Engine, Production I.G, Wit Studio and Kodansha, the series is animated by Wit Studio and directed by Shūhei Yabuta, with Hiroshi Seko handling series composition, Takahiko Abiru designing the characters[39] and Yutaka Yamada composing the music.[40] The series ran for 24 episodes on NHK General TV.[41] The series premiered on July 7, 2019, with the first three episodes.[42] Due to the pending arrival of Typhoon Faxai on September 8, 2019, episode 10 was delayed due to broadcasting news, and premiered the following week.[43] Due to the airing of the World Para Athletics Championship sports tournament on NHK, episode 18 was delayed and resumed on November 17 of the same year.[44] The series finished on December 29, 2019.[45] The first opening theme is "Mukanjyo" by Survive Said The Prophet while the first ending theme is "Torches" by Aimer.[46][47] The second opening theme is "Dark Crow" by Man with a Mission and the second ending theme is "Drown" by milet.[48][49]
When the anime finale aired in Japan, director Shuhei Yabuta wrote, "This big incident changed everything for Thorfinn, but his story will continue!".[59] On July 7, 2021, Twin Engine announced that a second season is in production.[60] Shūhei Yabuta returned as director, and Takahiko Abiru returned as character designer.[61] It is animated by MAPPA and premiered on Tokyo MX, BS11, and GBS on January 10, 2023.[62][63][d] The season will run for 24 episodes.[65] The second season is being simulcasted globally on both Netflix excluding China, and Crunchyroll excluding China, South Korea and Japan.[66] The opening theme is "River" by Anonymouz, while the ending theme is "Without Love" by LMYK.[66][67]
Rafael Motamayor of Polygon praised the anime series and compared it to Vikings. Motamayor commended the character development shown in its first three episodes and ultimately called it an epic story that shows "the horrors of being a Viking at the turn of the 11th century, while also serving as a coming-of-age tale set against the background of a bloody and thrilling war".[100] Gerald Rathkolb of Otaku USA called Vinland Saga a "story of a long, brilliantly written slow-burn revenge story" and named it one of the best anime series of 2019. Rathkolb wrote: "[It] is one of those rare anime that could have appeal outside of the anime sphere because of its setting and focus on complex characters and the excellent political intrigue ever-present in the show. It comes with my highest recommendation".[101] Nick Creamer from Anime News Network also delivered a positive review, praising the themes, action scenes and characters, stating "No one has any enemies, is one of Vinland Saga's principal lessons, a prayer of social goodwill that Thors complements with his dream of a distant, shimmering Vinland, a land free of strife and suffering. But Vinland Saga is not a sentimental work, and its conflicts stay mired in the blood and dirt of a country at war. Thors' idealistic prayer is quickly supplemented by a new moral, courtesy of the raider and mercenary lord Askeladd: "everyone is a slave, even if they can't see the chains." It's a story suffused with a thematic ambition and sharpness of perspective that raises its high above its genre peers. Populated with rich, sympathetic characters and adorned by breathtaking action highlights, it is a rich and rewarding adventure that might just inspire you to challenge the conditions of your own life. Beautiful, brutal, and fiercely intelligent. Succeeds effortlessly as a propulsive action vehicle, while also offering sharp commentary on human nature, remarkably characters, and a harsh yet beautifully realized world. Vinland Saga is one of the best anime of 2019".[102]
The series is streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix. Crunchyroll is simulcasting the series. The episode with English subtitles will be available an hour after it airs in Japan. In the United States, the corresponding schedule would be as follows:
Vinland Saga Season 1 concluded with Thorfinn attacking and cutting Canute in distress and despair, but Canute takes charge and claims command of the Viking army and the rule of England. Thorfinn is dragged away, and as he drops his knife in the chaos, his erstwhile journey flashes in the blade's reflection. The episode ends with shots of several previously unseen characters in various locations. Vinland Saga season 2 will adapt the Farm Arc or Ketil's Farm Arc of the manga.
Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 13 will continue where the previous episode left off, exploring the Slave Arc. The protagonist, Thorfinn, will be enslaved and lose his only goal in life. However, he will meet Einar, who helps him find a new meaning and regain his fire. Meanwhile, King Canute will focus on conquering new territories to bring the promised land to his people.

Kei and Ayanokoji do end up as a couple later on in the series, but many LN readers speculate it is just for show. I would have agreed with their sentiment, had Ayanokoji actually not shown a valid concern for Kei during this episode. 041b061a72
