How to Download and Install SQL Server Management Studio 2017 on Your PC
This how-to guide explains how to download and install Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio or SSMS. The latest version of SSMS is now 18.2. You can use this connect to the SQL Server versions 2019, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2008 & 2008 R2
In this article, I am going to explain how to install the SQL Server Express edition. We will download the SQL Server 2017 Express edition and perform the custom installation. Before we dive-in into the installation and configuration process, let me introduce you to the SQL Server Express edition.

SSMS 17.x is the latest generation of SQL Server Management Studio and providessupport for SQL Server 2017 and older versions. The idea behind the separateinstallation file of SSMS is to keep it separate from the server component and Microsoftis providing regular release versions with new features and enhancements over previousSSMS versions. Remember, Microsoft now provides a separate download for SQL Server Management Studio. It is no longer provided with SQL Server. You do not have to install SQL Server 2019 to use this new version of SQL Server Management Studio. This new version can be used to manage your older instances (SQL Server 2017, 2016, etc.), as well as any databases you have in Azure. If you like having the latest and greatest SQL Server Management tool then consider downloading and installing this new version of SSMS now.
As mentioned above, SSMS 19.x doesn't upgrade 18.x but will install side by side. If you don't wish to keep 18.x then you should run choco uninstall sql-server-management-studio prior to installing the latest version of this package.
